Hey everyone! I'm diving into the world of homelabbing and self-hosting, and while I'm not looking for a step-by-step guide, I'd really appreciate your insights, advice, and any potential pitfalls to watch out for. I've been lurking long enough to know that the docs usually cover most of my questions. Here's a bit about my setup:
- **Machine Specs:**
- Sabertooth X79
- Intel Xeon E5-2643
- 32GB DDR3 RAM @ 1333MHz
- 6x 2TB Drives
- TrueNAS Scale 25.04.0
I'm eager to learn as this is mostly a fun project for me rather than a professional endeavor. I'd love to push this build to see what a home lab can really do! Here's what I want to achieve:
- Media hosting using Jellyfin
- Backup for my primary PC
- Deep storage for my photography (especially for large files)
- Remote access to my TrueNAS webUI, Jellyfin, etc. (currently experimenting with Cloudflare, though I'm struggling a bit)
So, is this setup realistic for what I want to do? Can my machine handle everything I'm aiming for? I'm also curious about any configurations I should be wary of that might hinder my ability to add more features in the future. I'd love to hear your general thoughts and advice. Thanks in advance!

You're definitely on the right track! Your CPU is now super affordable, but it should work fine for what you want. Streaming via Jellyfin might be a bit resource-heavy if you plan on doing multiple streams off-site, especially 4K content, so expect to maybe handle 1-2 1080p streams tops without hitting your limits. Locally, you should be good to go though!
Also, don’t forget to enable XMP in your BIOS to ramp up your RAM speed to the max DDR3 allows—2133 MHz should give you a nice boost. Just keep in mind that your power bill might take a hit with that setup since the CPU and 6 drives can consume a lot of energy. Full send on the homelab journey!
Haha, right? I found my CPU for next to nothing, too! I started by scavenging parts from old PCs and piecing them together. It's a blast! Let's see how far we can take this!
