Is an NVMe Heatsink Really Necessary?

I've recently bought an NVMe SSD that doesn't come with a heatsink, and now I'm on the hunt for one. My motherboard has a metal cover over the M.2 slot, and I'm wondering if that serves as a heatsink or if it's just a cover with enough space for a generic heatsink to fit. Also, are all heatsinks compatible, or are there any specific ones you would recommend? I'd love to get the WD heatsinks, but I can't seem to find them sold separately, and the options on eBay look pretty cheap. Any advice?

Heatsinks for NVMe drives aren’t always necessary. Generally, Gen 3 drives don’t need one, but Gen 4 SSDs can benefit from a heatsink under heavy loads, and Gen 5 drives definitely need one to stay cool.

It’s helpful to know which motherboard you have. If there’s a substantial piece of metal covering the M.2 slot, it's likely a heatsink. These covers usually have a thermal pad to help dissipate heat. But if it's designed as a heatsink, you might not need an additional one for the NVMe.

Motherboard heatsinks can often be less effective compared to dedicated aftermarket solutions. Sometimes they don’t align well or can trap heat. If you want to ensure the best cooling, look for a heatsink that fully encapsulates the drive. This will help maintain performance and longevity.

A metal cover on the motherboard usually acts as a heatsink, but you can't put a heatsink from the NVMe drive beneath it. If your motherboard has that, it likely provides enough cooling for the SSD.

For most setups, especially with Gen 4 drives, they’re fine with just the case airflow keeping them cool. I had two Gen 4 drives without heatsinks, and they stayed below 60°C, which is safe. But if you’re running heavy tasks, consider getting a heatsink for better longevity.
