Can you connect servers directly to HPE c7000 VirtualConnect switches?

I've got several HPE c7000 enclosures outfitted with Flex 20/40 F8 switch modules. Our past managed service provider mentioned it wasn't feasible to connect a switch directly to the uplink port, and I never really questioned that. However, my new managed service provider claims it is indeed possible. I'm considering setting up a Shared uplink set to a single port to try it out. Has anyone had experience with this?

Wait, what? How else do you connect to an outside network? The VC modules should function like regular network interfaces. It's all about how you configure the blades to connect. It's quite common to trunk the uplinks, but if you really want a single blade to utilize a specific uplink port, that's totally doable! It'll be easier to visualize if you're using OneView, which gives you nice visual layouts.

From what I understand, your new provider might be mistaken. I've had some experience with HPE blade enclosures, and my previous provider said the same thing about not being able to connect directly to an uplink. They explained that the uplink ports have limitations related to inter-uplink forwarding. If a couple of servers are connected to different uplinks, they won't be able to communicate with each other. I'd double-check that before proceeding, just to be safe!
