Can I use RAM faster than my motherboard’s rated speed?

I'm considering upgrading my RAM from 16GB to 32GB for video editing and gaming, but my motherboard (Prime H410M-E) only supports up to 2933 MHz. The new RAM I'm looking at is rated between 3200 and 3600 MHz. If I install it, will it just run at the motherboard's maximum of 2933 MHz, or could I encounter issues? Both my current RAM and the new one are DDR4. I know it's not the best investment, but I'm curious about any potential problems that might arise.

Your RAM should automatically run at the max speed of 2933 MHz that your motherboard supports. There's no need to worry about issues; it will work just fine at that speed.

Check for a BIOS update for your motherboard that might allow support for higher speeds. Regardless, the RAM will work at the board's limit of 2933 MHz.

Run it at 2933 MHz for sure. You might even get a better performance if you compensate with a lower CAS latency.

It can depend on the RAM. Many modules come with multiple XMP profiles. If your new RAM doesn't have one for 2933 MHz, you might need to manually set the speed in BIOS.

Typically, it will auto-adjust to match what your motherboard can handle. If for some reason it doesn't, you can always access the BIOS and set the speed manually by pressing F10 or ESC when booting.
