I've recently installed an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X 3D processor with a Deepcool Ls 720 cooler. I'm seeing idle temperatures between 45°C and 60°C, but when I max out the CPU during gaming, the temperatures spike quickly to around 85°C and even reach 90°C. I'm worried it could be harmful if it stays that high for extended play sessions. Is this normal?

These temperatures are pretty standard for the Ryzen CPUs. They can actually handle high temps quite well, often reaching up to 90-95°C without immediate damage. It doesn't hurt to keep an eye on it though! You might want to check out a couple of videos that explain this in better detail.
You're safe temperature-wise, but 90°C while gaming is definitely on the high side. I'd suggest taking off the cooler and checking the thermal paste application. It could be uneven or not enough pressure, which might be causing the high heat.
