How Can I Tell If My USB Flash Drive Is Genuine?

I recently bought a 128 GB USB 3.0 flash drive to store some data, and I wanted to check its authenticity. A friend recommended using H2testw to verify if the drive is genuine. After running the test overnight, it showed that only 14.8 GB of the drive is usable, while 102.3 GB appears to be corrupted. I also tried formatting the drive and uploaded a 40 GB folder, which completed without issues, even though the writing speed was only 9.7 MB/s instead of the promised 130 MB/s. I'm confused about whether to trust the H2testw results. Did I end up with a counterfeit drive? Should I return it or is everything okay? I'd appreciate some insights!

H2testw is a reliable tool, and it seems like you may have been scammed. If the drive genuinely only holds 14.8 GB, it’s a classic example of a counterfeit with a misleading advertised capacity. Make sure to return it ASAP, especially since you mentioned that 40 GB of data could end up being lost.

That sounds frustrating! I can't believe the seller isn't cooperating. They should be held accountable.

It sounds like you might have gotten a counterfeit drive. Fake USB drives can only store a small amount of data, and when you add more, they just overwrite existing files while keeping the folder structure intact. So your drive might show that it has space, but actually, it's just masking the truth until the files become unusable later on. You should definitely return it and avoid using it for important data!

Yeah, it's crazy what some sellers do just to trick people! You definitely want to get a refund.

You got it right with H2testw. It checks if the actual storage matches what’s advertised by writing unique data to the drive and then reading it back. If it shows that only the last few gigabytes are usable, that’s a sure sign you have a fake drive. Just to clarify, how much did you pay for it? If it was significantly less than average for a 128 GB, it’s another indicator you got scammed.

I bought it for 1650 INR, while online it's around 2200 INR! Definitely sounds sketchy now.
