Should I upgrade my R7 5700X or my GTX 1080 for better video editing performance?

Hey everyone! I'm a staff photographer and videographer at my college, and I'm a film and photo major. Right now, I have a desktop setup with an R7 5700X, a GTX 1080, and 32GB of RAM. Lately, I've been experiencing some slowdowns when working with video editing software and Lightroom. I've read that the GTX 1080 might not handle h.264 as well, which could be causing these issues. I'm looking for advice on whether I should upgrade my GPU or my CPU. Intuitively, I think the GPU is the weak link here, but I'm not entirely sure if that's the root of my performance problems. Any thoughts?

Absolutely, I’d recommend upgrading the GPU as well. Your R7 5700X should be fine for a while longer, and a more powerful GPU will definitely help with video editing. A 5070 level card would also fit nicely with your current setup. And hey, prices are decent right now on eBay!

Good to know! I’ve been checking eBay, and the 5070s aren’t looking too bad. Thanks!

I think the GPU is where you should focus your upgrades. You're likely going to see a significant boost with a newer card, especially since editing software can take advantage of more VRAM and newer encoders. A 5060 Ti with 16GB would be a great choice!
