Why is my powerline connection lagging with a UPS?

I've just set up an APC Back-UPS 2200VA, 230V BX2200MI-GR to provide backup power, connecting it to a powerline adapter (TP-Link TL-WPA8630P v2) via its passthrough. The ping to the powerline unit itself is fine, but any device connected through it experiences a drastic increase in latency, jumping from a negligible 5 ms to a frustrating 200-300 ms. I'm looking for insights on what's causing this lag and if there's a way to improve the situation since running a proper Ethernet line isn't an option and my WiFi isn't reliable either. Thanks!

You might want to try a different outlet if that's an option. Sometimes the distance from your electrical panel or other interference can cause these lag issues.

Unfortunately, there's no other outlet close enough.

This is a common issue with powerline adapters. They work best when plugged directly into the wall without any additional devices like UPS units, surge protectors, or power strips. These devices can introduce noise and affect the performance of the powerline connection.

The powerline is already plugged straight into the wall, but the UPS is the one connected to it.

Avoid using that passthrough for your UPS. If possible, try plugging it into a completely separate outlet; it can help with lag issues significantly. I once ran a long Ethernet cable to another outlet to test this, and the latency dropped, but obviously that's not a long-term solution.

Rerouting an Ethernet cable that far isn't practical for me.

Powerline adapters can be sensitive to noise, and UPS devices tend to generate a lot of electrical noise on the line. This might lead to your powerline trying to resend data repeatedly, causing the increased latency. The UPS definitely might need to be connected elsewhere to avoid this.

Thanks for shedding light on that!
