Hey everyone! I'm new here and I just got a MacBook Air M5 to use for college. I noticed that while I was coding with the Codex extension in VS Code, the laptop got really hot and the battery drained super fast. To test it out, I tried some lighter tasks like browsing Safari and listening to music, and it felt a bit warm too. A friend of mine has an Air M4 and he mentioned that it shouldn't even get warm with those lighter tasks. So I'm a bit worried here—is this normal behavior for the M5? Should I be concerned about it getting so hot? Thanks for any help! 😢

It sounds like your MacBook might just need some time to settle in, especially if you recently updated the OS. Sometimes, after an update, the system has to reindex and can run warmer during that time. But if it continues to get hot during light tasks, it might be worth checking for any background processes that could be taking up resources. Remember, it shouldn’t overheat under normal use!
I’ve experienced the same thing with my MacBook too! It's not uncommon for some tasks to heat it up a bit, especially when you're running extensions or tools that are resource-intensive. Just keep an eye on it—if it frequently overheats without heavy tasks, then you might want to look into it further.
Honestly, if your friend’s Air M4 isn’t getting warm, it might just be a difference in usage. M5 can be a bit different, especially under load. Just make sure you’re not blocking the vents. If it keeps getting super hot, consider running some checks on the battery and fan speeds.

How long does that settling period usually take? I just got my Mac, and I hope it’s not a long-term issue!
