Is it worth upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5600X for 4K gaming?

I've been using a Ryzen 5 5600X paired with an RTX 3080 for a while, but unfortunately, my CPU failed last week. Before I just replace it with another 5600X, I'm curious whether upgrading to a higher-end AM4 CPU would provide a significant performance boost, particularly for gaming at 4K. If there are worthwhile upgrades, what would you recommend?

Even if you bought the best gaming CPU out there, like the 9800X3D, you probably wouldn’t see much benefit since your 3080 is likely your bottleneck at 4K. You'd do just fine with another 5600X and could invest in a stronger GPU later on without much performance sacrifice. There's only about a 9 FPS difference at 4K between the 5600X and 9800X3D with stronger GPUs, so I'd say stick with a 5600X for now.

The only significant upgrade would be to an X3D chip, but they can be pretty pricey and hard to find. Since you're gaming at 4K, I'd recommend picking up a used R5 5600 or 5600X and waiting a couple of years for a more substantial platform upgrade.

At 4K, your performance is heavily reliant on your GPU rather than your CPU. If you can find an X3D chip, it might benefit you in some games, but the difference won't be huge at 4K. Honestly, just grabbing a replacement 5600X sounds like a solid plan.

I switched from a 5700X to a 5700X3D, and I could definitely feel the upgrade difference, especially playing at 2K. If you can, getting an X3D for that extra cache can be worth it.
