Understanding GPU Utilization and Temperature: What’s Normal?

Hey everyone! I'm helping a friend figure out what's going on with his GPU performance, but I'm not super knowledgeable myself, so I thought I'd reach out for some advice. He has a GeForce RTX 5060 Ti with 16GB of VRAM. When he plays most games, his GPU utilization hovers between 20-40%, and he doesn't always run everything on high settings. He uses Vsync, and the temperatures range from 45°C to 61°C.

He recently played GTA 5 with Vsync turned off, and his FPS shot up to around 300, but his GPU temp was at 65°C with utilization hitting 98%. Does that sound normal? Also, what would be considered max temperatures for his GPU to keep an eye on during idle and under load? Just to give you an idea of his overall setup, he's running an Intel i7-14700KF, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a 1TB SATA SSD, and a Prime B760M A-AX motherboard on Windows 11. Thanks in advance for your help!

I’d recommend he downloads HWinfo64 to monitor temperatures in real-time. Sometimes, the CPU can be the bottleneck, especially if he's gaming at 1080p. If he keeps seeing low GPU usage, it could be that the CPU or VRMs are getting too hot, affecting performance. Make sure his BIOS is updated too, as that can help with stability and performance!

Yeah, he's using Nvidia's app for monitoring, but I’ll suggest HWinfo to get better insights!

Your friend’s GPU temps seem totally fine for gaming! Ideally, you want to keep it under 90°C, but crossing 60°C during normal gaming is pretty common. If his utilization is low, it may just be a matter of settings or resolution; he should consider turning up the graphics to make better use of that powerful card. Also, modern GPUs do throttle performance when temps go too high to prevent damage, so it's good he's monitoring those temps!

Definitely! And remember, if he's just upgraded, it can take time to adjust settings to optimize performance.

The 45°C to 61°C range during gaming is perfectly safe! As long as it doesn't hit 90°C or above, he's good. Regarding the 98% GPU utilization, that's pretty normal, especially at higher resolutions like 1440p or 4k. If he’s still adjusting from a 60Hz monitor, it might take time to maximize his settings for the best experience without throttling.

Exactly! It might help him to get used to the new settings to truly utilize his system.
