Why is my laptop’s RAM usage so high while gaming?

I have an Acer Nitro V15 with 16GB of RAM, and I've noticed that my memory usage spikes above 90% during gameplay, especially when I play modded Minecraft. According to Task Manager, Minecraft usually consumes around 1000-2000MB, and with other programs like Discord and Firefox running, that adds up to about 4GB total usage. However, the performance tab shows I'm using 14.5 out of 15.3GB of RAM, which seems excessive. What could be the cause of this high memory usage? Also, if you have any tips to help reduce lag, I would appreciate it!

You could really benefit from upgrading to 32GB of RAM. That's a solid amount for gaming and should help with the lag you're experiencing during heavier games like modded Minecraft.

Modded Minecraft can be a serious RAM eater! Depending on the number and type of mods you're using, high RAM usage can be expected. Just make sure your system can handle what you’re throwing at it, or consider dialing back on some mods to reduce memory load.

It's pretty normal for Windows to use a fair amount of RAM, but it sounds like you're seeing a lot of it getting taken up. The operating system itself needs memory for its services, and everything running in the background can add up quickly. You might want to check if any other unnecessary programs are running when you're gaming.

But 12GB seems excessive just for Windows, right? I thought my laptop's lag might be due to high memory usage.

I had a similar issue; closing background apps helped a ton!

If you're using a web browser like Chrome, that can eat up a huge portion of your RAM. Try to close tabs or even the whole browser when gaming. Also, occasionally clearing out your Recycle Bin can help free up space, even if it doesn't impact RAM directly.

Yeah, it's true that Chrome is a RAM hog! I stick with Firefox and try to keep tabs to a minimum.

I generally use Firefox too, but I do have Chrome installed just in case.
