Hey there! I was recently offered a used SSD for free, and I'm considering adding it as a third drive to my PC specifically for installing large games like Red Dead Redemption 2. I'm a bit anxious about its reliability since it's used, but I'm planning to format the drive first. All my game progress is saved in the cloud, so data loss isn't a big concern for me.
My main worry is whether using this SSD could potentially harm my PC in any way. Is there a real risk, or do you think it's safe to go ahead and use it? Also, would my concerns be the same if I were considering a used HDD instead? Thanks!

You'll be totally fine using a used SSD! These drives don’t have their own power source and depend on your system. If it ends up failing, the worst that can happen is that it just won't work. Your system will recognize the failure and won’t let it affect other components. It's super rare for a failing drive to cause actual damage to the rest of your hardware, so you should be good to go. Just keep in mind that any electronic can fail, new or old!
