Should I Upgrade My GPU or CPU for Better Gaming Performance?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU paired with an RX 6600 GPU and I have 32GB of DDR4 RAM. I mainly play Classic WoW and Slay the Spire across 2-3 monitors, often streaming YouTube or live videos on the side while raiding. Lately, I've been frustrated with the performance in WoW, especially during raids, and I feel like it's time to upgrade my hardware. It seems like WoW relies heavily on single-core performance, so I'm unsure whether I should prioritize upgrading my GPU or CPU. I have a budget of around $400 to $550 and there's a Micro Center nearby. Despite the high RAM prices, I'm not keen on switching to AM5 and dealing with less RAM. I've recently considered the 9060 XT 16GB for about $420, but I'm also weighing the possibility of getting a 5500X3D or 5600X3D. I would love to hear your thoughts on the best direction for this upgrade!

There’s a big jump between $400 and $550. For the higher end, you could snag a 9070, which brings about 30-40% more performance over the 9060XT, depending on your settings. But if you're looking to save money, the 9060XT will still do a good job for your current gaming setup.

Track how your CPU and GPU are performing while gaming. If you're always maxing out one of them, that’s your bottleneck. Given how WoW runs, it might be beneficial to focus on single-core performance first, or even upgrading your RAM if that's the issue you're hitting.

That makes sense! I’ll monitor my usage to see what's dragging things down.

For the GPU, I recommend the 9060XT 16GB, but if you're open to used cards, something like the 3080 or the 6800XT would give you more FPS. They're around $325 used most of the time. After upgrading the GPU, consider selling your old one to fund a better CPU, like the 5700X or 5800X, which could enhance your performance a bit further.

Definitely look into those used options. They can provide a good performance boost!

The RX 9060XT 16GB is definitely a solid pick for your budget, especially for the games you're playing. Just keep the performance increase in mind, as sometimes spending just a bit more can yield significantly better results!

Before deciding on an upgrade, make sure your settings are optimized. Enable XMP or EXPO for your RAM, Resizable BAR for your GPU, and consider things like game mode settings in Windows to boost performance. Also, you might want to check if you're fully utilizing all your monitors since that can impact FPS. If you upgrade your GPU and CPU, maybe invest in a 27" 2K OLED for immersive gameplay. But for your games, refresh rates aren’t too crucial since you aren't playing competitive titles.

Yeah, and if you’re maxing out your monitors, it could really strain your system, especially if you’re hitting performance caps.

True! I need to check that. Thanks for the tips!

For WoW, I’ve heard good things about the 5500X3D helping with performance. If you’re focusing on single-core capability, that might be a solid choice.
