Hey folks, I'm feeling really anxious right now as I've just been charged with impaired driving in Ontario, Canada. This is my first offence, and thankfully no one else was hurt or involved. I'm trying to figure out how this will change my job prospects in IT, especially since I'm looking to advance to a system administrator role. I know this will show up on background checks, but will I automatically get disqualified from jobs? Will I have to wait for a pardon in five years before getting hired? I've worked in both government and private sectors and currently have a reliability clearance. Is that going to be taken away from me? Any experiences or advice would mean a lot!

In Canada, a DUI is pretty serious, and it might limit your options with some employers, especially in high-trust positions. But honestly, many companies won't care or might just ask you to disclose it. If it was a while ago and your work performance hasn't been affected, you should be fine about 95% of the time.
Honestly, many in the IT field have similar histories. Your technical abilities matter much more than past mistakes, especially if you've learned from them. Just keep pushing forward!
While some positions do require background checks, it really depends on the company. Most places don’t look too deeply unless you're applying for something in law enforcement or sensitive sectors. I’ve known colleagues who’ve had DUIs and still kept their jobs without any issues!
It's important to be transparent, but a DUI isn’t an immediate deal-breaker for IT jobs. If you're applying to roles where driving isn't a requirement, you’ll likely be okay. Just focus on your skills and experience!
