Experiencing Major FPS Drops and Random Shutdowns—Could My CPU Be Failing?

I'm having some serious performance issues with my PC and could really use some help. Here are my specs: Ryzen 5800X CPU, 3070 GPU, 32 GB 3600 MHz RAM, and a B550 Tomahawk motherboard. Recently, I've noticed significant frame drops and stuttering while gaming, particularly in League of Legends and Valorant. This gets even worse when I try to stream on Discord, and sometimes the stream doesn't even show anything—just a black screen. My temps seem okay, mostly in the 60s under load, but this past Sunday my PC just shut down while I was playing. I got a red light on the motherboard indicating a CPU issue and it wouldn't post. After reseating the CPU, RAM, and GPU, it started up and works, but the performance issues continue. Any thoughts on what might be going wrong?

You should really check for dump files after the shutdowns. These files are crash logs that can help diagnose the problem. If your PC boots up normally, go to C:WindowsMinidump to see if there are any there. You can zip them and upload them to a file-sharing site to share for analysis. If you're missing files, make sure to configure your settings to get small memory dumps going forward.

Have you checked if others are having issues with the Ryzen 5800X overheating or failing? Sometimes there are common problems that pop up. I'd look into it to see if your CPU might be part of that. Maybe you've just been lucky until now!

I've skimmed a few forums and saw some reports from a couple years back, but I thought I might have missed the defective batch since mine was good until recently.

Make sure your BIOS and chipset drivers are current. Sometimes an outdated BIOS can lead to compatibility issues with newer software or Windows updates.

My BIOS is probably a few versions behind. I usually avoid updating it unless I really need to, but the chipset drivers *should* be up to date since I use Ryzen Master.

What are your temps like while you're gaming? Also, have you checked the event log for any critical errors when your system turns off? This can often point to PSU issues or extreme overheating.

I haven't run stress tests yet because I'm a bit scared of pushing it too hard, but I plan to do that soon. I also need to figure out how to access the event log—I'll definitely check it out.

Updating your BIOS might be a good first step. Sometimes, recent Windows updates can conflict with older BIOS versions. Also, consider running DISM and SFC scans from the command prompt to check for OS-level problems.
