Can I Get My Father’s Apple Laptops Unlocked?

I'm in a tough situation with my dad, who has Alzheimer's. He's forgotten the passwords for his two Apple laptops, and I want to bring one to him for when he's having clearer days. My sister and I have power of attorney over his affairs, and I'm wondering if we can take one or both laptops to an Apple Store for unlocking. Is it possible to have Apple help us out, or are the laptops basically useless now?

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't unlock devices like this. If you can't access the Apple account that the laptops are linked to, they won't be able to help in-store either. If you're comfortable with it, you might want to try alternatives at home first.

Changing the password of the Apple account is key here. If you can reset that password, then recovering the login password for each laptop should be straightforward. Just make sure to have the email associated with the Apple account handy, as that’ll be essential for any resets you'd need to do.

He doesn't remember any of his passwords, including the Apple account. I haven't tried anything yet, as I'm worried about locking the devices out even more.

Have you tried using recovery mode? If you have access to the email linked to the Apple account, you might be able to reset that password. On a good day, you could also ask your dad what he wants his new password to be—it could be a way to jog his memory and unlock the laptops.
