Is It Necessary to Update My BIOS?

I have a Gigabyte Aorus Master motherboard that's been running on the "F9" BIOS version since I got it. I haven't experienced any problems with it, but I recently installed a PCIe x1 card and it's not showing up. Now I'm wondering if I should consider updating my BIOS. I've heard that flashing the BIOS can be risky and could potentially brick my PC, so I'm hesitant. Am I worrying too much? Some people say if everything is working fine, there's no need to update. Is it worth doing it?

When it comes to updating your BIOS, it really depends on your situation. The general rule of thumb is not to update it just for maintenance. If you're facing issues—like with that PCIe card—it might be worth doing. Just be sure not to power off your PC during the process. And if you live in an area that often has power outages, consider using a UPS to avoid bricking your board. That said, if your BIOS is working fine, you might be okay leaving it as is.

Updating should be considered as a way to increase security and stability. I know some say to avoid it if things are stable, but remember that vulnerabilities like Spectre and Meltdown exist. So, don't just ignore updates—they can be important!

Think of BIOS updates as a way to improve performance or fix specific issues. They often add support for new hardware, enhance stability, and can also patch security vulnerabilities. If you don't update, you might run into problems later on when you want to upgrade your system. So, it can be a good move to stay current, especially if you're experiencing issues now.

Only update your BIOS if there's a new version that addresses a specific problem. I've always stuck to that advice, as updating can sometimes lead to new issues. If your system is running smoothly, maybe it's best to leave it alone.

I've got the same motherboard and recently updated mine because I was having some trouble. The support team suggested the update might help, and it really did! So if they recommended it, it was actually worth doing. It's not that complicated either, just follow the steps carefully.
