I'm trying to figure out a way to monitor file movements or changes within Active Directory or domain group policies. Since I'm new to this area, I'd love to know if there are any tools available—preferably free ones or maybe scripts that can help with this monitoring.

You should try enabling Object Access Auditing in Group Policy. You can set this up on specific folders through their Security properties. Just be cautious—this can generate a lot of logs, so target only the folders that are important to you.

Varonis is another great option if you’re open to paid tools. It’s really effective for monitoring file activity.

Cayosoft offers a free tool that might meet your needs, though you may find that you have to eventually invest in a premium option depending on your requirements.

What features does your paid tool have that make it better than Cayosoft?

You can enable the built-in audit logging feature. Just keep in mind it can get quite noisy, which is why it’s usually turned off by default. Make sure to specify exactly what you're looking for to refine the logging process.

Definitely! It's super important to filter the logging so you're not overwhelmed with unnecessary data.

If you're looking for a more user-friendly option, ManageEngine's AD Audit Plus is quite common for this kind of task. However, if you want to focus specifically on file monitoring, you might want to check out ManageEngine Data Security Plus.

I’ve heard great things about Netwrix Auditor, but it’s not free. That said, you can use it in a free mode if you can manage without the 'who' field—it still gives some useful oversight.

Have you considered using the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM)? It’s included with Windows Server and could help you monitor file usage.
