Advice Needed for Upgrading Windows Server and Licensing Issues

I'm managing the tech side of my dad's company and need some guidance on upgrading our server. Currently, we have a Lenovo SR 550 running Windows Server 2016, which we use primarily for the ERP software Tally, allowing around 15 systems to connect via TSPlus. We're transitioning to a new ERP system and planning to upgrade to Windows Server 2025. I want to know if I can perform this upgrade in-place without causing any issues. It's crucial that Tally remains functional alongside TSPlus, and all shared folders on the server work correctly.

I understand that upgrading involves loading the Windows Server 2025 ISO onto a USB and running setup.exe. If there's an option to "Keep Files and Settings," that should make things easier. I've also got some questions about licensing. Based on what I've read, it looks like I'd need a "Windows Server® Standard (16 core)" and an "Additional License APOS (4 core)" since we're running a dual Xeon Silver 4210 processor with a total of 20 cores. Is that additional license necessary?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Before you do anything, make sure to check with Tally about compatibility with Windows Server 2025. Some applications don't support the latest versions. When you're ready to upgrade, load up the ISO for Windows Server 2022, assuming that's what you're running now. You can use the upgrade option that keeps files and settings. And don't forget to back everything up beforehand. Use something like Veeam to do a full backup in case something goes wrong.

Here’s a straightforward approach: back everything up thoroughly and check with your software vendors about compatibility. Once that's settled, you can go ahead with the upgrade knowing you have a way to get back on track if needed.

It's wise to take a full backup first and test it to ensure it works. However, just as a heads up, check if your server model supports server 2025—many older models, like the SR 550, are only compatible with up to server 2022. Given its age, you might consider looking into newer hardware because running a new system on older hardware can lead to problems down the road. It might be worth exploring SaaS options for the new app if that's available.

Make sure you contact the software vendor to verify if the new ERP software will be supported on Windows Server 2025. Taking a backup before the upgrade is crucial, as it allows you to restore if something goes wrong.

Absolutely, back up the entire server first! Create a full image that you can restore if things go sideways. Once that's done, try the upgrade. If you run into any issues, just restore from your backup. As for licensing, it can be a headache, but the information you have seems correct regarding the licenses you'll need.
