Should I Choose the 7800XT or 5070 for Gaming?

I'm building my first gaming PC and I'm trying to decide between two graphics cards: the 7800XT and the 5070. I'm mainly focused on 1440p gaming. Initially, I thought the 7800XT would be a solid choice, especially because it has more VRAM. However, I'm considering upgrading to the 5070 since I'm okay with spending a bit more. Can anyone give me advice on whether the extra VRAM from the 7800XT is worth it for long-term use compared to the performance of the 5070?

If you're choosing between these two, I’d say go for the RX 7800XT. A card with 16GB VRAM is naturally a better investment than a 12GB card like the 5070 for the future.

For the best quality gaming at different resolutions, I recommend 8GB for 1080p, 12GB for 1440p, and 16GB for 4K. Since you’re looking at 1440p, going for the 5070 might be a good move, especially if you can find a good price.

Going with the 7800XT is a no-brainer just for the VRAM. It gives you more longevity, especially for high-quality settings in demanding games. Definitely worth considering!

It's really a matter of how long you plan to keep your GPU. Right now, 12GB of VRAM is decent for gaming, but in a few years, 16GB will likely perform much better as more games push the limits. Check this out for more info on VRAM needs: [link]. If you're planning to keep the card for several years, going with the 7800XT's 16GB might be the wise choice!

That link is super helpful! It's crazy how much VRAM some new games are using nowadays.

Agreed. I think the RTX 4070 with 12GB is fine for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if games start using more VRAM soon.

Honestly, I’d lean toward a 16GB card. With new consoles coming out, 12GB is going to feel a bit limiting in the near future, making a 16GB card a safer bet long-term. Also, keep an eye out for the upcoming 9060 XT with 16GB that'll be out next month. It might be a solid option!
