I recently noticed that the hinge on my laptop is broken, and I'm worried that it might break even further if I try to open it. I'm planning to buy a new laptop in a few months, so I don't want to spend money on repairs. However, I really need to access my files, such as pictures and documents, from this old laptop. Depending on what netbook you have, if it's not soldered, you can remove the SSD and put it in an external enclosure to access it from a new computer. But remember, if the files are encrypted, you’ll need the decryption key to access them.
The hinge breaking doesn’t necessarily mean that the internal ribbon cables are damaged. If the worst happens, you might be able to remove the hard drive or SSD and retrieve the data directly from there. That’s usually the safest method if the laptop won't cooperate!
What brand and model is your laptop? And is it using an SSD or a traditional hard drive? That info could help pinpoint the best way to recover your files.
Another option could be using a USB flash drive with a bootable OS to try and access your files. It might take some time, but it could work without needing to open the laptop all the way up.
If your laptop has a video output, like HDMI or DisplayPort over USB-C, you could connect it to an external monitor. Just use a separate mouse and keyboard to operate it. The tricky part is getting to the power button, but if you open the laptop slowly, it might hold up!
