Why is my 7800X3D and 4090 setup getting significantly lower FPS than my friend’s 9800X3D build?

Hey everyone! I've been running some in-game performance tests in Marvel Rivals, and I'm seeing a huge difference. My friend has a 1440p setup with a 9800X3D and a 5080FE, and he's averaging around 100 FPS more than I am with my 7800X3D and 4090, even though we're using the exact same in-game settings, including the same ini configurations.

I'm starting to wonder if I might be missing something, because I expected the performance gap not to be this drastic. Historically, my benchmarks on other games have been fine, and I've scored well on 3DMark and FurMark as well.

One indicator I noticed is that my frametimes are a bit higher, although my max GPU FPS is better than my friend's while his max RHI FPS exceeds mine. We've both ruled out Frame Generation as we're not using it.

The strange part about this performance drop is that it only happens in Marvel Rivals; all my other games are running smoothly. I tried a range of troubleshooting steps including updating the BIOS, upgrading Windows, using DISM/SFC, DDU for driver reinstall, and even re-installing Marvel Rivals. I also checked to ensure my GPU is running via PCIE 4.0 x16.

I'm starting to suspect that this could be an issue related to Unreal Engine 5 or EAC specific to my setup. Would really appreciate any insights or advice on how to troubleshoot this further. Thanks!

Just a heads up, you mentioned having your GPU on PCIEx 4.0; make sure it’s actually running at x16, because if it’s x4, that could seriously hinder your performance. Just double-checking!

You might want to check out some performance benchmarks on YouTube to see if other similar builds are experiencing the same issues. The 9800X3D has a better cooling setup since it flips the cache and CCD chiplets, which can boost its performance in certain games. In fact, I've seen reports where games can run 50% faster on the 9800X3D compared to the 7800X3D!

I just watched a recent comparison by Hardware Unboxed, and they noted that in Marvel Rivals, the FPS difference should only be around 10 FPS on average, not 100. You might have something else affecting your performance!

Did you verify your game settings? Maybe there's something small that needs fine-tuning, especially given it’s only happening in that specific title. I had similar issues where game-specific settings impacted performance a lot.

Make sure to use RTSS to check if your GPU is utilizing its max frequency during gameplay. Also, keep an eye on CPU usage. It might give you insights into whether the bottleneck is coming from the GPU or CPU side.

I did check, and everything seems okay. My GPU clocks are fine, and my CPU usage is around 75-80%, while the GPU sits at 80-90%. Thanks for the suggestion!
