What Should I Do If My Laptop Got Wet?

So, a child accidentally dunked my laptop into a bathtub full of water while it was still on. I managed to stop him, but the keyboard was already soaked and the laptop shut down on its own. I've wiped off the exterior and set it out to dry. How long should I wait before attempting to turn it back on?

I feel for you. Once water gets under the keyboard, it usually reaches the motherboard. Unless you’re super tech-savvy, your laptop probably won’t make it. Time to consider a new one, unfortunately.

If you can, try to remove the battery and avoid turning it back on. Let it dry for at least 48 hours. For a better chance, take it to a good repair shop where they can clean it with isopropyl alcohol. Just brace yourself for the possibility that it may not recover from this.

You could try rinsing the interior and connectors with isopropyl alcohol, but keep it away from the screen! Chances are, though, you may just end up needing a new laptop after this.
