Hey everyone! I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 2600 with a stock cooler, paired with an MSI B450 Tomahawk motherboard, 32GB of 3000 MHz RAM, and a GTX 1660 graphics card. I'm considering an upgrade to a Ryzen 9 3900X and want to know if it's feasible with my existing setup. Specifically, I'm curious about:
- Will the MSI B450 Tomahawk support the new Ryzen 5th gen processor with a BIOS update?
- Is my 450W power supply adequate, or will I need something more powerful?
- Can I still use the stock cooler from the Ryzen 5 2600, or should I invest in an aftermarket cooler?
- Are there any potential issues regarding VRMs, thermals, or RAM stability with four sticks running at 3000 MHz?
- Lastly, considering my current GTX 1660, would this upgrade make sense, or would I be facing significant GPU limitations?
My primary usage involves gaming and photo editing with Photoshop and Illustrator.

1) If the BIOS is updated, your MSI B450 Tomahawk will support the new CPU.
2) Your 450W PSU should suffice since you’re sticking with the lower-end GPU.
3) RAM stability with 4 sticks depends on your motherboard’s limits. Did you use XMP profiles successfully before?
4) Just a heads up, you might experience GPU limitations while gaming.
You might want to consider a Ryzen 5 5600X. It's a great upgrade in terms of performance and value. The 5600X comes with the same Wraith Stealth cooler as the 2600X, but if you're aiming for a 5800X, you definitely need a better cooler.
Also, about the RAM: 4 sticks running at 3000 MHz should work fine, as long as they are the same spec sticks.
But do keep in mind that your GTX 1660 will limit performance in most modern games, especially graphically intensive ones. Maybe save up for a new GPU after your CPU upgrade!
