Hey folks! I'm considering a CPU upgrade from my current Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 9 3900X. Here's what I have:
- **CPU:** Ryzen 5 2600 (using the **stock cooler**)
- **Motherboard:** MSI B450 Tomahawk
- **RAM:** 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3000 MHz
- **GPU:** GTX 1660 Gigabyte
- **PSU:** 450W (80+ Bronze) Gigabyte
I'm curious if my motherboard supports this upgrade with a BIOS update, if my PSU is enough, whether I need an aftermarket cooler, and what potential issues I might face with VRMs, thermals, and RAM stability. Also, will I be bottlenecked by my GTX 1660 for gaming? I mainly use my setup for gaming, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Definitely, a BIOS update will enable compatibility for the new CPU if it isn't already updated. Your PSU should be adequate as you’re keeping your current GPU. Just make sure that your RAM is running in XMP—any issues here can usually be resolved with proper motherboard settings. Do expect some GPU limitations when gaming, though!
1) Yup, your MSI B450 Tomahawk can definitely support the Ryzen 5th gen CPUs with a BIOS update.
2) Your 450W PSU should be fine, especially since you're not planning to upgrade your GPU right now. Just keep in mind the TDP of the new CPU.
3) I'd recommend investing in an aftermarket cooler, like a Deepcool or Noctua, for better thermal performance.
4) The B450 Tomahawk is solid and shouldn't have issues with VRMs or stability for your RAM setup.
5) As for the GTX 1660, yes, you might hit a GPU bottleneck in graphics-heavy tasks. If you plan on gaming, a strong GPU upgrade might be even more beneficial down the line!
The Ryzen 5 5600X is also a fantastic upgrade option, offering great value, and it comes with a decent cooler. If you're considering the 5700 or 5800X, check the price difference in your area to see if it's worth it. Your RAM should work well; I have a similar setup running fine. Just a heads up though, you’ll get more game performance improvements by upgrading your GPU first since the 1660 can limit graphics-heavy games.

For your Photoshop and Illustrator work, I'd stick with NVIDIA for a GPU upgrade because of the CUDA cores. Even a used 30 or 40 series card could be a significant boost!
