I've been working at my company for several years, primarily managing on-premises Elasticsearch and overseeing CI/CD workflows. Recently, I started helping a junior DevOps engineer who is in a different time zone. While I don't manage their tasks, I act as a support resource when they encounter challenges. I've noticed they sometimes hesitate to ask for help, possibly due to language and cultural differences, which can block their progress. I focus on the technical side and help troubleshoot issues. However, since I've never mentored anyone before, I'm seeking advice on how to enhance communication and workflow between us as they also need to learn about our AI support systems. I find chatting easier than voice calls due to potential comprehension issues. Any tips on mentoring and facilitating communication would be greatly appreciated!

As a junior myself, I found it helpful when my senior would ask me how to solve a problem at a basic level rather than just giving me the answer. This way, I learned through figuring things out myself, which really helped me retain the information. Maybe a similar approach could work for you!
The more interaction you have, the less they’ll need you as questions are asked repeatedly and answered. They’ll begin to build confidence in their problem-solving skills with practice. Just be patient—if it’s not a critical issue, allow them time to tackle it on their own if you believe they can resolve it.
Thanks! I’ll try giving them a bit more space to work through issues.
Empathy is key in mentoring. Reflect on your own experiences as a junior—what challenges did you face? Consider that juniors may feel intimidated asking questions that could make them seem inexperienced. It's great to share your own 'silly' questions to reassure them that it's okay not to know everything. Creating an open environment where they feel comfortable reaching out to you can foster better communication. You could even ask them directly what challenges they are facing—this dialogue can really help!
I've been sharing my screen to demonstrate my process, including my mistakes, but sometimes it feels like they don’t fully grasp it. I provide them with detailed instructions, but sometimes they hesitate to approach me with problems. I really want to help without overstepping their boundaries.
It’s tough, right? I keep saying they can ask me anything, but I still feel lost sometimes.

That sounds promising! I might give that a shot to help them grasp debugging better.
