Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a vintage PC for playing classic games like Quake, Unreal, and Half-Life, but I'd also like to handle some current-gen titles on low to mid graphics settings. Here's what I'm considering for my setup:
- Q9550 CPU (Intel Core2 Quad 2.83GHz/12M/1333 SLB8V LGA775)
- Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard with 16GB DDR2 RAM
- Nvidia GTX 1660 or 1060 (6GB DDR6/6GB DDR5)
- SSD
What do you think? Any advice or recommendations? Thanks!

If you decide to switch to an i7, just ask around! I can help recommend a solid motherboard and GPU setup that will fit your needs.
I suggest you reconsider your choices. Instead of sticking with DDR2 and an older CPU, why not upgrade to DDR3 with a better motherboard? It would give you better performance, especially for newer games.
If you're planning on using Windows XP, the GTX 960 might be a better fit since it's more compatible with older drivers. I'd also recommend looking into an i7 from the 3000 or 4000 series, though you might face some compatibility issues with XP. If you're going for a mixed setup, try to avoid having too much of a generational gap between your components.
Thanks for the tip! I'm actually considering modern hardware options, like an i3 with DDR3 RAM, instead of the legacy stuff. It could definitely offer better performance for my needs.
For a mix of retro and some current titles, I'd recommend a Gen 3 or Gen 4 platform like an E3-1270 v2 paired with an RX 470 and 16GB of DDR3 RAM. I’ve had great success running all sorts of games with that setup, hitting over 800 FPS on Unreal Gold!

Just a heads up, the E3-1270 v2 is similar to the i7-3770, while the E3-1270 is more like the i7-2600. So you'll get solid performance either way!
