What Video Card Should I Get to Upgrade My Son’s Gaming PC?

I built a gaming computer for my son a few years back using parts from a friend's old setup. The specs include an i7 8700k CPU, 32GB of RAM, and a GTX 1080 graphics card. Unfortunately, the 1080 just died in a smoky, dramatic way, and while everything else seems to be fine, I need to replace the GPU. My son is only 10, so he doesn't need cutting-edge performance, but I'm interested in upgrading to something more modern without breaking the bank. I've found a new 3070 for around $300 and I'm wondering if that's a smart choice or if I should consider AMD instead. Any recommendations for a solid upgrade?

A 3070 should fit well in your existing setup! I had an old 2080 that also went kaput, so I feel your pain. If you're looking at the 3070, it should definitely serve your needs for a while. I’d advise checking out used cards too, maybe ones without fancy lighting, to avoid any overheating risks down the road. Those LED connectors can be a real headache!

Haha yeah, I think the same issue might've happened with mine! That 4-pin connector on the back definitely looks suspect.
