Is it time to upgrade my gaming PC?

I've owned my gaming PC since 2021, and it was built by my uncle. Although I'm quite into gaming, I don't have extensive knowledge about building PCs, but I know my setup was really good back then. I have an AMD Ryzen 9 3900x processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphic card, an ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F Gaming motherboard, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM (two 16GB sticks). I've noticed that some newer games are starting to lag and have longer loading times, which makes me question if I should upgrade. When I search online, I see that the CPU and GPU still hold up, but I'm unsure what to do next. My main monitor runs at 3440 x 1440 with a refresh rate of 100Hz. Any advice on whether I should upgrade and what I should consider?

First off, what's your budget for this upgrade? Graphics cards are usually the easiest to swap out. Check out reviews from sites like Tom's Hardware or TechPowerUp for comparisons on performance. Also, you might want to think about what games you want to play and whether your current setup can handle them adequately. If your absolute max budget is around $1000, that gives a decent range for an upgrade. Just keep in mind that components are pretty pricey right now.

Yeah, I'm not too familiar with prices either, but that sounds reasonable for a good GPU upgrade!

Consider why you want to upgrade at all. Right now isn’t the best time for upgrades due to pricing, especially if you're still running most games fine. If you're not having any major issues with performance and can play everything you want, it might just not be the right time to spend money unnecessarily. Plus, you don't want to rush into upgrading if everything is still decent.

I hear you! But I've noticed that the loading times are getting slower, especially for bigger games. I’m considering an upgrade now simply because I’ve started to have a more stable income.

Honestly, with your setup, you should still be achieving pretty respectable performance. The key question is whether your current specs meet your gaming needs. If you're satisfied with how things are running, it might not be necessary to upgrade just yet. I mean, it's a high-end build, and an upgrade can be super costly.

True, but I’ve definitely noticed some games running slower lately. I usually play on higher settings, so that’s probably contributing to it. I’ll keep monitoring both CPU and GPU prices before making any decisions.

If you're not facing any serious issues, I'd hold off for now, especially since prices for parts are high. Upgrading your GPU would likely help, but it could lead to a bottleneck due to your CPU. Newer CPUs are expensive at the moment, too, especially with DDR5 pricing. Maybe wait until the prices stabilize before committing to an upgrade.

Yeah, I think I’ll take your advice. I’m already seeing some lag in games, but I’ll wait to upgrade both the CPU and GPU when things are more affordable.
