I'm looking to prevent certain apps, specifically WhatsApp and Messenger, from accessing the internet when they're opened. I've already managed to block their websites by editing the hosts file, but now I want to ensure these apps themselves can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions on how to do this?

What OS are you using? It's important to know because the way to block apps can vary. If you’re on Windows, for instance, you might want to consider using firewall settings or third-party software that has app-level control. That way, you can configure it to block internet access specifically for those apps.
Firewalls can be quite handy for this! After you mention your OS, look into firewall software that allows you to manage internet access on a per-app basis. That could be a straightforward solution.
If you're open to a bit of a setup, consider using Pi-hole. It's a network-level ad blocker, but you can also set it up to block certain servers, which would cut the internet access for those apps you want to restrict.
