How Can I Recover Data From an SSD That Windows Says Needs Initialization?

About two months ago, Windows 11 warned me that the storage drive in my company laptop was deteriorating and should be replaced. I sent the laptop to internal IT, but some important files had not synchronized properly to cloud storage, so I could no longer access them afterward. IT removed the SSD and connected it with an adapter, but Windows now identifies it as uninitialized. They warned that initializing it could overwrite or remove the existing data. Is there a safe way to recover the files without initializing or modifying the SSD?

If Disk Management shows the correct full capacity, the problem may only be a damaged partition table. Recovery software can sometimes scan the drive directly and reconstruct partitions or extract files. However, SSDs can fail differently from traditional hard drives, and repeated scans or writes may make things worse. Avoid experimenting unless you have a verified image and know exactly what you are doing.

Do not initialize, format, or otherwise write to the SSD. An uninitialized status can mean the partition table is damaged, but it can also indicate a more serious SSD controller or firmware failure. The first step should be making a sector-by-sector image or clone, if the drive can still be read, and performing recovery attempts on that copy rather than the original. Since these are important company files, a professional data-recovery service is the safest option; it may cost several hundred dollars or more, but IT or the company should normally handle that decision.
