Why does my Galaxy XCover 7 suddenly drop from 40% to 1%?

My Samsung Galaxy XCover 7 is about a year old and has started showing strange battery behavior. When the charge reaches around 40%, the phone can drop to 1% within a few seconds if I leave it sitting unused on a table or bed. This usually does not happen while I am actively using the phone, and once it reaches 1%, it can remain there for a long time. The issue first appeared during a cold Norwegian winter while I was skiing and listening to music, when the battery dropped from about 15% to 1%. Now it also happens indoors and at normal temperatures. I already close my apps, and the phone reports 91% battery health. What could be causing this, and is there anything I can try before replacing the battery?

The battery is probably no longer reporting its remaining charge accurately. A sudden drop like that usually means the battery voltage falls under load or the battery’s capacity has degraded, even if the phone still estimates its health at 91%. Replacing the battery is the most likely fix.

Try recalibrating the battery once: use the phone until it shuts itself off from low charge, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%. If it still jumps from around 40% to 1%, the battery should be replaced. The health percentage is only an estimate and does not rule out a faulty cell.

I’ll try a full discharge and recharge first, and replace the battery if the problem continues.

Cold temperatures may have triggered or exposed the problem, but the fact that it now happens indoors points to battery degradation rather than the weather. Since the XCover 7 has a user-replaceable battery, installing a genuine compatible replacement would be a practical next step.
