Is 6400 CL32 RAM a good choice for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D?

The 32GB Crucial DDR5-6400 CL32 kit is cheaper than a 32GB v-color DDR5-6000 CL30 EXPO kit, and I prefer the Crucial kit because the v-color memory has RGB lighting. I've read that DDR5-6000 CL30 is usually recommended for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but that faster memory can sometimes be downclocked. Would the 6400 kit be likely to work reliably, and is setting it to 6000 MT/s simple for someone with no memory-tuning experience? I'd rather avoid complicated manual testing or troubleshooting, so I want to be sure I'm not buying the wrong kit.

One Crucial kit with the model CP2K16G64C32U5B reportedly includes profiles for both 6400 CL32 and 6000 CL36. The 6000 profile may use looser timings than an ideal 6000 CL30 kit, but it should still be perfectly usable. You could later tighten the timings, but that requires memory testing and isn’t necessary for a normal gaming build.

I’m not interested in tuning for fun, so using a built-in 6000 profile sounds much better. I mainly want to avoid instability with the 9800X3D.

Either kit should perform similarly in games. The safest simple choice is whichever has a known 6000 MT/s EXPO profile, since that is the usual plug-and-play target for AM5. If the 6400 kit only offers a 6400 profile, it may still work, but you should be prepared to lower the memory speed and run a stability test if you encounter crashes or memory errors.

DDR5-6400 CL32 and DDR5-6000 CL30 have roughly the same primary latency, and the difference in real-world performance with a 9800X3D is very small. The X3D cache also makes memory tuning less important. If you want the easy route, enable the appropriate EXPO profile and leave the rest alone; if the system is unstable, run it at 6000 MT/s instead.

The Crucial kit is probably the better buy, especially if it’s cheaper. Check its listed profiles first—it may include a 6000 MT/s profile already, so you could select that in the BIOS instead of manually tuning everything. On AMD, 6000 is generally preferred because 6400 may force a less favorable memory-controller ratio and could be less stable depending on the CPU’s memory controller and FCLK.
