I'm running an AMD 9950X, an X870-Plus motherboard, 32GB of DDR5, nine case fans, and a 9060 XT 16GB. I calculated the system's power draw by adding the listed total or maximum power figures for each component and came up with about 691W, leaving roughly 159W of headroom on my 850W PSU.
I'm considering upgrading to a 9070 XT, which would increase GPU power usage by roughly 110–140W depending on whether I use its typical or maximum rating. That would put my estimated total somewhere between 801W and 835W. However, an online power-supply calculator suggests a much lower requirement, recommending a 750W unit for the current setup and somewhere in the 700–800W range with the upgraded GPU.
My original calculation included 18W for the motherboard, 170W for the CPU, 160W for the current GPU, 10W for the RAM, 270W for the CPU cooler, and 63W for the fans. I later realized the cooler's 270W rating may describe its cooling capacity rather than its electrical consumption.
Would my current 850W PSU safely support the 9070 XT, and what's the right way to estimate the system's actual power needs?

A good-quality 850W PSU should be plenty for a 9950X and 9070 XT. After correcting the cooler figure, your estimated total is much lower, and even a simultaneous heavy CPU-and-GPU workload should leave useful headroom. Make sure the PSU is a reputable model and use the proper dedicated GPU power cables.
For a rough check, add the CPU and GPU maximum power figures, then allow around 30% extra headroom for the motherboard, drives, fans, transient spikes, and general margin. Using roughly 200W for the CPU and 304W for the GPU gives about 670W after that margin, so an 850W unit is comfortably sized assuming it’s a decent, healthy PSU.
Power calculators are intentionally conservative and often include safety margin. They’re useful for choosing a PSU, but adding every component’s maximum rating is not a realistic prediction of normal system usage. Some parts may reach their limits independently, but a CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and every fan all drawing their maximum at exactly the same time is uncommon.
The biggest issue is the 270W listed for the CPU cooler. That’s the amount of heat the cooler is designed to handle, not the electricity it consumes. The cooler’s fans probably use around 10W or so, meaning your original estimate is about 260W too high. The CPU and cooler also shouldn’t be added together as though the cooler itself consumes 270W.
That explains the mismatch. I assumed the cooler’s thermal rating was its power draw, so my estimate was massively inflated.

If you want extra margin, you can also slightly undervolt the GPU or set a 240–250W power limit. That usually costs very little performance while reducing heat and power spikes.
