I built a budget-conscious gaming PC with a Ryzen 7 7700X and a Radeon RX 9060 XT. My current display is a 32-inch 4K 60Hz monitor, and I'm considering switching to a less expensive 27-inch 1440p 300Hz IPS monitor. The deal is tempting, but I'm unsure whether the GPU can produce enough frames to make a 300Hz display worthwhile. At 4K, I usually get around 50–60 FPS in lighter games and 30–40 FPS in more demanding ones. How can I estimate the highest realistic FPS at 1440p, and would I be better off keeping my current monitor or choosing a lower-refresh 1440p display?

At 1440p, expect roughly 60–75 FPS in heavier games at high settings, with higher results in lighter or well-optimized titles. Lowering settings can improve that, but a consistent 300 FPS would generally require a faster GPU. A 1440p 300Hz monitor can still work, but you’d be paying for refresh-rate headroom you probably won’t use often.
The RX 9060 XT should handle 1440p well, especially the 16GB model. You may need to use optimized settings and Quality FSR 4 in some demanding games, but that can still look very good. A 27-inch 1440p screen is generally a great balance of sharpness and performance. Just don’t expect to reach 300 FPS in every modern title.

The 9060 XT is perfectly usable at 1440p, but calling it a dedicated 300Hz card is unrealistic. If the price is unusually good, the monitor can still be a nice purchase for future GPU upgrades and fast competitive games. Otherwise, a 1440p display in the 144–180Hz range would likely match your current hardware more sensibly.
In that case, I may be better off keeping the 4K display or looking for a cheaper 1440p panel with a lower refresh rate instead of downscaling and barely using 300Hz.
