I'm finishing a new gaming PC with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB, and a single 16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 Patriot Viper memory stick. I can't afford a second stick right now, so I'm wondering how much running in single-channel mode will affect gaming performance at 1440p. Will it cause major FPS drops or stuttering, or is it reasonable to add another matching stick later?

DDR5 systems handle a single 16GB module better than many older DDR4 setups, so don’t stress about it. Your PC will still perform well at 1440p; just treat the second stick as a worthwhile future upgrade rather than something you must buy immediately.
It’ll work fine, especially with a 7800X3D. A second stick would improve memory bandwidth and may help average FPS or 1% lows in CPU-limited situations, but at 1440p with this CPU and GPU, the difference is generally small. You shouldn’t expect a major performance problem for now.
The bigger concern is capacity rather than single-channel mode. Sixteen gigabytes is still enough for many games, but newer titles, browsers, launchers, and background apps can push you close to the limit. If the system runs out of memory, you may notice stuttering or slowdowns, so keep an eye on memory usage and close unnecessary applications while you’re on 16GB.
Use the single stick for now and add a second one when you can. It isn’t ideal as the permanent setup, but it’s a perfectly reasonable way to spread out the cost. Try to get a matching 16GB stick with the same speed and timings later, although mixing memory kits is never guaranteed to work at the advertised settings.
The larger gains from dual-channel usually show up when the CPU is the bottleneck. With an X3D chip and 1440p gaming, the practical difference is often only a few percent.
