I want to try Linux on an old HP Pavilion dv4 laptop, but I'm not sure whether its processor is 32-bit or 64-bit. I've never used Linux before and don't know much about the hardware. Are there still Linux distributions that support 32-bit systems, and how can I identify the CPU before choosing an installer?

“32-bit” can refer to different processor families, so identifying the CPU is important. For 32-bit x86 hardware, distributions often label their downloads as x86, i386, or i686. However, most dv4 models should be able to run a 64-bit Linux distribution, which will generally provide better software compatibility today. A lightweight desktop environment will also help the laptop feel more responsive.

Yes, 32-bit Linux still exists, although support is becoming less common. Debian, Alpine, Slackware, antiX, Void Linux i686, and Gentoo are examples. For a beginner using older hardware, antiX is probably one of the easier choices because it is lightweight and still supports 32-bit systems.

The HP Pavilion dv4 was generally sold with either an AMD Turion or an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and both are 64-bit-capable. If the laptop currently runs 32-bit Windows, that does not necessarily mean the CPU itself is limited to 32-bit. Check the exact model number, look under the battery, inspect the CPU information in the existing operating system, or check the BIOS before deciding.

It’s an old HP Pavilion dv4 that originally belonged to my cousin, so I’ll look for the exact model number and CPU information.
