What Computer Skills Should Everyone Know at a Basic Level?

Basic technology concepts are more useful for most people than learning a programming language. Understand the difference between local files and cloud data, what happens when a website is unavailable, what an internet connection does and doesn’t provide, and the basics of user accounts, permissions, passwords, storage, servers, and IP addresses. It’s also worth thinking about privacy—for example, the difference between GPS receiving location signals and an app sending your location over the internet.

Learn your operating system and its file system. Know where files are saved, how folders work, how to search for files, how to install and uninstall programs, and how to check storage, memory, and running processes. Basic keyboard shortcuts and a little command-line or terminal use are also worthwhile. You don’t need to memorize everything—just become comfortable looking things up and reading the instructions in error messages.

The most important thing is learning how to recognize scams and phishing. Be suspicious of urgent messages asking you to log in, send money, install software, or reveal a password. Check the sender and the website address carefully, avoid clicking unexpected links, use a password manager with unique passwords, turn on two-factor authentication, and keep your devices and apps updated. When in doubt, open the official app or type the organization’s address yourself instead of following the message.
