Can VoIP Call Quality Match an iPhone, or Is My Provider the Problem?

I recently set up a RingCentral VoIP system for my home office, but the call audio sounds noticeably tinny, muffled, and thin compared with calls on my iPhone. Both sides can understand each other, but the quality feels like a downgrade, which is a serious concern because I'll be calling current and prospective clients.

The setup uses a Cisco 8851 desk phone with a Jabra Engage 65 SE headset. The phone is connected directly to my router over Ethernet. My connection tests around 915 Mbps down, 40 Mbps up, 8 ms latency, and 1 ms jitter. SIP ALG is disabled, the phone is configured for OPUS, HD Voice is enabled, and the bandwidth setting is set to high.

The same poor audio happens when I use the RingCentral mobile app over both Wi-Fi and cellular data, regardless of whether I'm calling iPhones, business phones, or other VoIP systems. That makes me suspect the provider or its codec and bitrate configuration rather than my network or desk phone. Support says the calls look fine but hasn't been able to confirm which codec or OPUS bitrate is being used. The phone also switches back to OPUS if I try selecting G.722.

Is iPhone-level quality realistic with VoIP? Could this be caused by RingCentral's codec or routing choices, or should I consider switching providers?

Your network statistics look more than sufficient, so this probably isn’t an internet bandwidth or latency problem. OPUS can sound excellent, but the provider controls the negotiated bitrate and codec settings. If they won’t tell you what is actually being used, that makes troubleshooting difficult. Ask them to verify the negotiated codec, bitrate, and call route rather than only checking whether packets are being lost.

That makes sense. I can select G.722 on the Cisco phone, but the service immediately provisions it back to OPUS. I’ll ask them specifically for the negotiated bitrate and codec details.

It’s possible to get very good VoIP audio, often close to or better than a normal cellular call, so you aren’t expecting too much. However, provider quality varies a lot. Some services use conservative bitrate settings or less-than-ideal carrier routes, which can make every call sound compressed even when your local network is perfect.

Since the mobile app sounds bad over both Wi-Fi and cellular, testing another headset or Ethernet cable probably won’t solve the main issue. That pattern points more toward the service’s media path, transcoding, or outbound carrier routes. Before switching, request a documented escalation with sample call times and destinations; if support still can’t identify the codec and route, changing providers may be the most practical solution.

Other providers can work well too. Vonage Business is worth considering if CRM integration and pricing matter, while Zadarma’s cloud PBX has worked reliably for some small businesses using premium call routes. I’d compare providers based on codec transparency, carrier routing, support responsiveness, and a hands-on trial rather than assuming the biggest provider will have the best audio.

Microsoft Teams Phone has been consistently clear in our business deployment, including for a few hundred users. If you already use Microsoft 365, it may be worth evaluating as an alternative. The important thing is to test calls before migrating and compare the same phones, headsets, and destinations.

I already use Microsoft 365 for the office, so I’ll investigate Teams Phone and see whether they offer a trial or test number.
