I found a second-hand Sold Out edition of Command & Conquer: Renegade and am considering buying it. The game was advertised as supporting systems up to Windows Vista or Windows 7, depending on the packaging, and I'm wondering whether the original CD can still be installed and played on a Windows 11 laptop. I have a separate USB CD/DVD drive, but I'm not very technical, so I'd appreciate beginner-friendly advice. I'm also cautious about using unofficial abandonware downloads.

It will probably be worth trying. Windows 11 can usually run many Windows XP-era games, especially if the installer launches normally. The bigger issue may be the old copy-protection or CD-check software, which modern versions of Windows may block. Don’t install unknown replacement executables from unofficial sites; check a reputable compatibility guide first and use the original disc where possible.
Before buying, look up the game on a trusted PC game compatibility guide. It should list known fixes, launch options, patches, and whether the original disc protection works on current Windows versions. XP-era games often run better than much older Windows 95 titles, but individual installers and DRM systems can still be the deciding factor.
If the physical copy refuses to install or the old disc protection causes problems, a virtual machine is another possibility. You could set up an older Windows environment in VirtualBox and keep it isolated from your normal system, although that’s more complicated for a beginner and may require a legitimate older Windows license. A community-maintained patch such as Tiberian Technologies’ TT Patch may also help with Renegade compatibility, but verify exactly what it changes before installing anything.
The simplest option may be the Steam version. Command & Conquer: Renegade is included in the Command & Conquer collection, and it can generally be purchased outright without an EA Play subscription. Availability and pricing may vary by region, but it’s usually inexpensive and avoids dealing with an aging disc installer.
That clears up my confusion—I was looking at the subscription section. I may still try the physical copy for curiosity, but the digital collection sounds like the easier route.
