Why is my Ethernet speed so inconsistent?

I've recently set up Ethernet for my PC, but I'm noticing really low and inconsistent speeds in my speed tests, ranging from 1mbps to 50mbps. It's a new cable, so I don't think that's the issue. There's also a solid red light and a flashing yellow light on the connection where it plugs into my PC. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Make sure to clarify if you mean 1mbps or 1MBps because that really changes the game. There’s a huge difference between those units! Also, how old is your computer? Older hardware can sometimes struggle with newer speeds.

First, it's important to check what speed your internet plan actually is. The speeds you're seeing might just be a limitation of your ISP. Can you find out your plan's maximum speed? That’ll help narrow things down!

I know the plan says it's supposed to be much faster. But I'm unsure if I'm measuring right, so that’s why I'm investigating.
