Why Do All of My Graphics Cards Have Coil Whine?

Is coil whine simply unavoidable with modern graphics cards? I've owned more than six GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD, including several different models and brands, and every one has produced some level of buzzing or squealing. It can even happen while scrolling in Chrome, although it's quieter. In Minecraft, the pitch changes noticeably depending on whether I look up, down, or turn around, almost like the GPU is playing a musical instrument.

I've tried cards such as the RTX 4070 Super, RX 7900 XTX, RX 9070 XT, RTX 4090, RTX 5080, and RTX 4060 across different cases, motherboards, and power supplies. The PSUs have included models from Corsair, NZXT, and SilverStone, but the noise has remained. My monitor currently runs at 160 Hz, and I've also tried lowering frame rates, though the whine is still present.

Could the apartment's electrical wiring or power quality be contributing to this? Would a UPS or power filter help, or is finding a completely silent graphics card mostly a matter of luck?

Power quality could potentially affect the sound, especially in an older or unusual electrical installation, but replacing PSUs over and over is unlikely to solve the problem by itself. A properly rated UPS with voltage regulation or power conditioning may be worth testing, but a basic surge protector generally will not filter out coil whine. There is no guarantee that the result will change.

Higher-end models with stronger power delivery and better construction can sometimes be quieter, but premium branding is not a guarantee. Even a large, expensive card can whine while a cheaper one is silent. Coil whine can also change over time, which may explain why older cards that were initially quiet later became audible.

It may also be partly down to hearing sensitivity and the room setup. Younger people can hear high-frequency electrical noise that others do not notice, and a small apartment with the computer close by makes it harder to escape. If the noise is not accompanied by instability or overheating, it is usually annoying rather than dangerous. Limiting FPS or moving the PC farther away may be more practical than chasing a theoretically silent card.

Moving it to another room is difficult because the apartment is very small, but I’ll try more aggressive frame limits and undervolting before replacing anything else.

Coil whine is caused by the interaction between the GPU’s inductors, power delivery, frame rate, and the rest of the system. Changing the graphics card, PSU, motherboard, or even the outlet can change how noticeable it is, but none of those parts guarantees silence. Two identical cards can behave differently, and a card that is quiet in one system may whine in another. Frame-rate limiting, undervolting, and avoiding unnecessarily high FPS are usually more reliable ways to reduce it than repeatedly replacing hardware.

Very high refresh rates and uncapped frame rates are common triggers. Some cards only start whining at several hundred frames per second, while others do it during lighter desktop workloads or scrolling. Try setting a frame limit for games and experimenting with a slightly lower desktop refresh rate. Physical distance and headphones also make a major difference, since a PC beside your head will make a moderate whine seem much worse.
