I built my first PC a few months ago and am considering a GPU upgrade. My current card is a Radeon 7900 XT with 20GB of VRAM, but I am looking at the RTX 5070 Ti and possibly the RTX 5080. I would like advice on which models offer the best value and whether the 5080 is worth considering over the 5070 Ti. I have also heard that dropping from 20GB to 16GB of VRAM may matter, so I am wondering how significant that difference is for gaming.
My display is a 27-inch 2560×1440 OLED running at 240Hz. I want to play games at very high settings, but I have noticed high GPU temperatures and am not sure whether the problem is airflow, tuning, or simply the hardware choice. Would adding bottom intake fans help, and is that an easy upgrade?
My system has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 64GB of DDR5-6000 memory, a Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WiFi7 motherboard, a 2TB XG7000 SSD, a Corsair RM850x 850W Gold power supply, a Corsair Nautilus 360 RS ARGB cooler, and a Lancool 217 INF case running Windows 11. Would either NVIDIA card work well with this setup?

Before upgrading, investigate the temperatures and performance issue first. Check GPU hotspot temperature, fan speed, case airflow, and whether the card is boosting normally. Undervolting or setting a sensible fan curve can reduce heat and noise without losing much performance. The Lancool 217 already has strong airflow potential, but bottom intake fans can help feed fresh air toward the GPU if there is room and the mounting brackets are compatible. They are generally easy to install: mount the fans, connect them to motherboard or hub headers, and configure their speed in BIOS or software. Just make sure the airflow direction is correct and avoid working inside the system while it is powered.
The RTX 5070 Ti would be a relatively small upgrade from a 7900 XT, so it probably would not justify the cost unless you specifically want NVIDIA features such as CUDA, better ray tracing, or certain streaming and rendering tools. The RTX 5080 is the more meaningful upgrade, but it is still worth checking its price carefully because the performance increase may not justify a large premium. Your CPU, motherboard, RAM, and 850W power supply should work well with either card, assuming the specific 5080 model does not have unusually high power requirements.
So the 5080 would be the only one that really makes sense for an upgrade, but I should avoid paying a huge premium for a particular model?
For 1440p gaming, 16GB versus 20GB usually is not an immediate problem. It mainly becomes important when a game uses extremely high-resolution textures, heavy ray tracing, mods, or a workload that actually fills the available memory. Since your 7900 XT already performs very well at 1440p, changing to a 5070 Ti could feel more like a sidegrade than a real upgrade. I would keep the current card unless you need NVIDIA-specific features or can buy a 5080 at a reasonable price.
At 2560×1440 and 240Hz, the 7900 XT should still handle most games at high settings. Lowering one or two demanding options often has a much larger effect than replacing the whole card.

I mainly want the best settings without excessive heat, so checking hotspot temperatures and learning to undervolt may be smarter than upgrading immediately.
