I'm planning a complete PC rebuild and will move my RTX 4070 into the new system. My current desktop was built in 2020 with a Ryzen 7 3800X, 32GB of DDR4, and an RTX 2070 originally. It has served me well, but I'm ready for a major upgrade. This machine will be used almost exclusively for gaming, and I'm strongly considering a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Is AMD still the better choice for gaming, or are Intel CPUs competitive enough to consider?

For a gaming-first build, AMD is generally the safer pick right now, especially the X3D processors. Intel can still make sense if you find an excellent deal or need heavier productivity performance, but for gaming value and efficiency, Ryzen is hard to beat.
The 7800X3D is still a strong option, and newer models like the 9800X3D or 9850X3D are worth considering if they fit your budget. Since you’re building a whole new platform, compare the total cost of the CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory rather than focusing only on the processor price.
Since you’re gaming almost exclusively, I’d stick with AMD unless Intel offers a substantially better bundle. Pairing an X3D chip with your RTX 4070 should make for a very capable system, and the extra cache can help in many games.
That’s what I was leaning toward. My current 3800X has been excellent for years, and I found a bundle with a 7800X3D, 32GB of DDR5, and an X870 motherboard for $749. I’m seriously considering going with that.
