What’s the best affordable way to improve Wi-Fi coverage in a four-level house?

I live in a roughly 2,500-square-foot split-level house with four floors, including the basement. The internet connection and current router are in the basement. Wi-Fi works reliably in the living room but periodically drops out on the upper floors. I'll only be living here for about another year, so I'm looking for a reasonably priced solution rather than an expensive permanent installation. Would a different router, Wi-Fi booster, mesh system, or powerline adapter work best?

A reasonably priced mesh kit is likely the simplest answer. Systems from eero or TP-Link are easy to set up, and you could start with two or three nodes instead of buying a high-end router. Just make sure the satellite units are placed where they still receive a decent signal from the main unit—not in the dead zone upstairs.

The basement is probably the biggest problem. Wi-Fi coverage will usually improve much more if you can run Ethernet to a central location on the first floor and move the main router there. If running cable is practical, that’s the best option. Otherwise, a mesh system with one unit near the basement connection and another upstairs should work better than trying to find one extremely powerful router.

A Wi-Fi booster in the living room might help if that room still gets a strong signal, but repeaters can cut performance and won’t solve a weak connection between floors. Another budget option is a powerline networking kit, with one adapter connected to the router and another upstairs. Results depend heavily on how the home’s electrical wiring is arranged, so it’s less predictable than wired Ethernet or mesh.
