I'm trying to simplify my setup around one dock and one USB-C cable for several computers, including a Windows PC and an M4 Pro Mac. Ideally, I'd like to connect four monitors natively—either daisy-chained or through separate USB-C outputs—without relying on DisplayLink. DisplayLink works for switching between my computers, but it doesn't provide the native display experience I want on macOS. Can I add Thunderbolt 5 to any Windows motherboard with a PCIe expansion card, or does the motherboard need a specific Thunderbolt header or built-in support? I'm also wondering whether Thunderbolt 5 would actually help with a multi-monitor setup, or whether Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 would be enough.

A KVM may be a cleaner solution than trying to make every computer act like a Thunderbolt workstation. You could connect the Windows PC directly to the KVM and connect the Mac through a suitable Thunderbolt dock, then switch the monitors, keyboard, and mouse together. The exact setup depends on the monitors’ inputs and the bandwidth needed.

Several AMD and Intel motherboards support Thunderbolt through add-in cards, but support varies a lot by brand and model. ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, and some MSI boards have compatible combinations. A regular PCIe slot by itself usually isn’t enough because the card also needs the proper header and display signal connections.

You may not actually need Thunderbolt 5 for this. A supported Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 system can handle multiple displays depending on the GPU, DisplayPort version, dock, and monitor arrangement. The dock has to support the number of displays and the required resolution and refresh rate; Thunderbolt alone doesn’t guarantee four native monitors.

Also verify how the dock handles video. Some docks use DisplayPort tunneling, while others rely on DisplayLink, which has different performance and macOS compatibility characteristics.
