How noticeable is the performance difference between DDR4-2133 and DDR4-3200 with XMP enabled?

I have a 32GB DDR4-3200 memory kit and enabled its XMP profile, but I'm wondering how much practical performance I gain compared with running it at the default DDR4-2133 speed. In which situations would the difference be noticeable, and when would it be mostly irrelevant? I also run some AI workloads on a GTX 1050 Ti. Since the card has limited VRAM and may offload some data to system RAM, I'm curious whether faster memory makes much difference there.

The difference depends heavily on the workload. Faster RAM can improve average and especially 1% low frame rates in CPU-limited games, competitive titles, and some memory-sensitive applications. In many GPU-limited games, though, the difference between 2133 and 3200 will be small. There isn’t one fixed FPS improvement that applies everywhere, so benchmarks or testing your own workloads are the best way to measure it.

For AI workloads on a GTX 1050 Ti, the main limitation is probably the card’s small VRAM capacity and its overall processing speed. If data spills into system memory, faster RAM may help a little, but it will still be dramatically slower than keeping the data in VRAM. Increasing memory capacity can matter more than increasing memory speed in that situation, while a graphics card with substantially more VRAM would make the biggest difference.

Upgrading the graphics card is the plan eventually, but I had some large bills to handle first. For now, I was mainly trying to understand what the RAM speed change does.

There’s basically no downside to using the manufacturer’s XMP profile as long as the system is stable. Without it, the kit usually runs at a conservative JEDEC speed such as 2133, even though it is rated for 3200. XMP won’t transform every workload, but it lets the memory operate at its advertised settings and can provide useful gains in CPU-sensitive tasks.

That makes sense, and I agree that enabling XMP is worthwhile. My question was more about how noticeable the actual performance difference is between the two speeds.
