Is it safe to connect a personal external drive to a shared work computer?

I have a physical external hard drive containing personal files and backups, but the folders are disorganized. Since I spend most of the day at work and only have access to a shared workplace computer, I wondered whether I could connect the drive and sort the files there. I would not intentionally copy or move anything onto the computer, but could the system, antivirus software, or IT department read, cache, log, or retain information about the files just from connecting and browsing the drive?

There is also a security risk in the other direction: if the drive contains malware or suspicious software, connecting it could trigger an alert or spread the infection to the company network. Even legitimate personal files can be scanned and investigated under workplace security procedures.

The practical answer is to treat work equipment as monitored and company-controlled, especially a shared computer. Organize the drive using a personal computer, or get clear approval from your manager or IT department before connecting it.

Assume the computer and its security tools can monitor what happens on connected devices. Antivirus software may scan files as soon as the drive is attached, and the system may create logs, thumbnails, temporary files, or other traces while you browse. That does not necessarily mean every file is copied, but you should not expect complete privacy.

It is safest not to connect a personal drive to a work computer at all. Many workplaces prohibit unapproved USB storage, and violating that policy could lead to disciplinary action even if your intent is harmless. Use your own computer instead, or ask for explicit permission first.
