Why does Windows show 80% memory usage when Task Manager apps use only 35–50%?

I use my computer for Adobe editing and other tasks that can consume a lot of memory. It has 16 GB of RAM, and recently Windows reported around 80% memory usage. However, the process list in Task Manager seemed to show only about 35–50% being used. Is this normal, and what could account for the difference?

If the system uses integrated graphics, the GPU reserves part of the system RAM for graphics work. That reserved memory won't necessarily appear as normal application usage, but it still reduces what is available to editing programs. A dedicated graphics card can avoid that particular limitation.

This is often normal. Windows uses otherwise idle RAM for file and application caching to make things load faster. That cached memory can be reclaimed automatically when an application needs it, so it usually isn't a problem unless you're seeing slowdowns, warnings, or applications running out of memory.

Check the Memory section in Task Manager and compare In use, Cached, Available, and Hardware reserved. The process list doesn't always explain every category included in the overall percentage.

Sixteen gigabytes can be fairly limiting for photo or video editing, especially with several Adobe applications, large projects, or a browser open at the same time. If performance is suffering or Windows is paging heavily, upgrading to 32 GB or more may help. Otherwise, 80% by itself doesn't mean something is wrong.
